Week 1

We’re almost at the end of week one of the holidays. Time flies when you’re having fun, even if it’s ridiculously cold. I’ve heard a rumour that it’s Spring, but I’m not sure it’s based on fact.

Anyway, I just thought I’d share a couple of pics from the past two days at Chicken and Frog. We’ve created puppet shows, written stories…

as well as making chocolate lollies, instant ice-cream and designer drinks,

Tomorrow the holiday programme continues with drawing and science workshops (both fully booked, sorry). This week is completely full, but there are a few places left for some of next week’s sessions.

We are rounding off this week with a visit from the rather wonderful Michelle Robinson. Michelle will be reading stories and signing books from 12:00-15:00, so do come along to say hello. If there are any budding writers out there, you are more than welcome too!

Keeping it in the family

Our groovy logo from local artist Russell Newton

‘The what?’ I hear you ask. Well, we decided that we wanted to provide affordable, high quality tuition at Chicken and Frog and we do. But the reality is that there is still a weekly cost for families which means that it is not an accessible service for everyone. This makes me sad, so we hatched a plan, way back in the summer of 2012 (before we’d opened for business). We applied to Brentwood Council for part of the Brentwood Share Fund, asking for a sum of money which would enable us to provide 12 x 1 hour sessions for 10 families.

Each family is provided with 12 x 1 hour tuition sessions in English or Numeracy (they choose each time), a free Learning Library, 10% discount on all books and a dedicated parents’ forum on our website. They even get a biscuit and a cuppa!

Just a small selection of games and books to borrow.

As I have said, our first session was this morning. We shared ideas with parents and their children, to try out at home. I even got my SMART board up and running so that we could share some of the fabulous FREE resources that are out there.

I am delighted that the project is now and up running and am very much looking forward to seeing it go from strength to strength. We are willing to re-run this project for as long as there is a demand for it. Although the funding itself won’t be renewed (it’s a one-off pot of money), we have spent wisely on long term resources and are more than happy to provide our teaching time purely for the joy of supporting our community.

p.s. A huge thanks to my amazing Dad, Louis, for giving up his Saturday mornings to teach. I may not say it enough, but you are the best xx

World Book Day

wbd2013

Before you know it World Book Day will be here. For us, everyday is book day, but it is rather wonderful that it has now become an internationally recognised event. What a fantastic way to celebrate the wonders of literature.

Throughout the day (Thursday 7th March), we will be holding impromptu story telling. All you have to do is drop in and ask for a story. Your wish is our command! If you happen to be dressed in something book-related, then you will recieve 10% off of everything in-store on the day (apart from the WBD £1 titles).

There will be a range of £1 WBD books to choose from, which you can either buy with real money or otherwise, use your WBD voucher which all children should recieve via school.

We survived half term!

Hello out there. It’s been such a full on week, that I haven’t had a chance to blog at all. I thought I’d take this opportunity to share some lovely photographs of the week.

Half term rest?

It’s only two days into the half term break and I think I need a rest! I may be on holiday from school, but the bookshop and family life is going full pelt, so it’s go, go, go.

On Monday we ran two Roald Dahl inspired cookery sessions. They were fantastically good fun (and exhausting). The back room still smells of melted chocolate and golden syrup. Yum! You can’t beat filling other people’s children full of sugar and then sending them home. We made ‘Nishnobblers’

20130219-175043.jpg
which are an ingenious combination of melted chocolate and bubble wrap. You don’t eat the bubble wrap, but it does create a fantastic bubbly effect and tastes scrummy too.

Then we moved onto ‘Willy Wonka’s Nutty Crunch Surprise’. The surprise being no nuts, but plenty of fizzy poppy candy instead. And we rounded off the sugar fest with ‘Fizzy Lifting Drinks’

20130219-175436.jpg

Burptastic. Huge thanks to the genius that was Roald Dahl for the inspiration and to the brilliant children who joined in the fun.

Today began gently with a lovely sleep in (thanks Mr Frog for getting up with smallest Radish). I made up for the leisurely start with a furious spring clean, before going into the shop to run a drama workshop.

20130219-180021.jpg

Another fun filled two hours with great children, all willing to get involved with the silly games. We ran through conscience ally, sat on smoking hot seats, created a puppet show and interrogated the Big Bad Wolf. All in a day’s work here at Chicken and Frog. I honestly love my job.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Roll up, roll up, come to our Fairtrade event on Saturday 2nd March. We are delighted to be supporting such an outstanding organisation, who work very hard to ensure that workers across the world are treated ethically.

20130215-105900.jpg

At the moment we are busy collecting Fairtrade packaging from biscuits, chocolate etc. and yes, before you ask, we are happy to eat the contents of said packaging first. It’s all in the name of charity!

So if you have any packaging, please do drop it into our Fairtrade ‘bin’.

20130215-113717.jpg

And then, pop in on Saturday 2nd March, from 10:00 onwards, to help us create a piece of collaborative recycled art.

If you want to find out more about Fairtrade events in Brentwood, check out @BwdFairtrade on Twitter.

Chapter 2

Chapter 1 began on 20th October 2012, when Chicken and Frog opened its doors to the public for the first time. Sure there was a hefty prologue which would have made Tolkien proud in terms of size, but the opening chapter itself was published just under three months ago.

However, like all good books, one chapter must close to allow the next to unfold and that’s just what’s happening at Chicken and Frog. As many of you know, we were lucky enough to be joined by Claire Mackaness of Beautiful Things. It’s been a great partnership for all concerned and we have loved welcoming Claire into our little haven, but it is now time for Claire to fly the nest! She has been offered a wonderful unit of her own in Ingrave and it’s just too good an opportunity to pass up.

I won’t lie, we will be sad to see Claire go. We have lots of laughs and she copes very well with Mr Frog’s ‘singing’. I want to take this opportunity to say thank-you to a lovely friend and to wish Claire all the very best for what I know is going to be a hugely successful future. This is not the end of our working relationship, so watch out for joint ventures!

So, we will have a physical space to fill and we have decided to add a couple of these groovy Ikea couches,

To lounge/listen/read/laugh…on

and quite a few of these,

Nom, nom, nom
Fluffy cushions!

As of Monday 21st January Claire’s gorgeous corner will be replaced by a place for you to unwind, share a book, munch on a cookie, listen to authors weave their magic…the possibilities are endless. Do keep an eye on Claire’s FB, Twitter or website to find out what she has planned and don’t panic; if you are booked in for sessions they are going ahead!

Christmas has come early!

Part of our mission statement for Chicken and Frog is to provide affordable education for the families of our community. To a large degree we have already achieved this, as we run tuition sessions* for just £15, without any scary tie-ins which ask for long-term commitments from parents.

English: A money frog. Picture taken by me.

Although in an ideal world we would love it if our children received all of the education that they need in school, for a variety of reasons this cannot or is not always the case. We found out first hand how expensive private tuition can be and felt that it would be beneficial to offer an alternative. To this end, we run 4:1 group tuition for a less daunting fee.

However, we are all too aware that for many families, the cost is still a barrier. As well as this, some parents need to know how to support their child with school work. I wouldn’t know where to begin if our eldest was struggling with maths and I know that there are other parents out there that feel the same.

Mr Frog & Mrs Chicken when eldest Radish needed help with maths!

Many schools run one-off literacy or numeracy drop-in sessions for their families, and whilst they are very good, they may not be enough. So what’s the solution? Well, we have come up with a cunning plan to help combat this tricky situation. Our plan began to take shape back in August when we heard about the Brentwood Localism Share Fund.

In essence, there is a pot of money which has been ring-fenced for self-sustaining community projects. For example, Claire Mackaness developed the Brentwood Bag Project, using funding from the Council, enabling her to deliver training to local community groups, on how to make and sell bags using re-claimed materials.

There are varying rules and regulations around the funding, but the main premise is that the money is used to benefit the community in a long-term, sustainable fashion.

Our idea is relatively simple. We will offer ten families (in the first instance), 12 x 1 hour tuition sessions in English or Maths (not both), on a fortnightly basis. For now, we will focus on Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. In addition to the contact time with the teacher, each family will have access to a chat-room and ‘ask the teacher’ section via our main website. We will also offer a 10% discount on books for the signed up families. The catch? There isn’t one, except that one parent must attend each session with their child. There is no cost to the families involved, unless they choose to buy a book! All we ask is that the families attend their allocated sessions each fortnight.

Exciting stuff heh! We are very grateful to the Council for awarding us our bid and are really looking forward to putting our plans into action once the New Year swings into view.

It’s competition time

We have some great news…well, actually we have two big pieces of news, but I’m only blogging about one of them tonight.

As you may already know, I run a ‘Creative Writing Club’ every Saturday afternoon, which is great fun. The sharing of stories through the written word and film, all leads to some wonderful writing from the children. I have been overwhelmed by the response the club has received; it has gone a long way to confirming my faith that children love writing.

https://i0.wp.com/publishedworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Children-creative-writing.jpg

To celebrate the talent that’s out there, we are running our very own creative writing competition in the New Year. We invite children to write a short story or narrative poem about Mr Frog and Mrs Chicken. The rest is left entirely up to the budding authors.

The fabulous J.D.Irwin will be joining us to whittle the entries down to three final winners (one from each of the following Key Stages – KS1, KS2 & KS3). All entries need to be with us by Saturday 26th January, by post, in person or via email: competition@chickenandfrog.co.uk. If you are from a local school and would like to get involved, we can arrange collection of your children’s entries on Friday 25th January.

https://twimg0-a.akamaihd.net/profile_images/1785377066/032.jpg

Julie will present the three winners with their prizes on Saturday 9th February at 14:00, right here at Chicken and Frog Bookshop. In addition each winning entry will be published on our website, so they can grab their fifteen minutes of fame! So, what are you waiting for? Get those pencils sharpened…

P.S. All entries must include the child’s full name, D.O.B and contact details.

Dig deep

Good morning one and all. I know that it is bitterly cold out there today and that there’s a recession on, but today I’m asking you to put all of that aside for the sake of one amazingly brave little boy. Sky Harrington-Ellis is just two years old, yet he and his family have already been through more than most of us will experience in a life time.

skyTonight we will be staying open until 21.30 to help raise much needed funds for Sky and his loving parents, Paul and Marie. So, wrap up and dig deep people. Chicken and Frog and Beautiful Things will be donating a percentage of our takings from this evening to Sky’s fund, as well as holding a raffle full of lovely prizes, all kindly donated by members of the community.

And to show you how much we appreciate your support, there’ll be mince pies and mulled wine waiting for you.

To donate directly, you can follow this link: http://www.gofundme.com/SkysFund#description
