March Madness

Well, tomorrow is the start of March, which means that World Book Day 2014 is swinging into view and we can’t wait!

20140228-193818.jpg
We are going all out this year, celebrating the joy of books. Obviously we don’t really need an excuse, being a bookshop and all, but it’s pretty cool that the month is dedicated to our favourite pastime.

So, what are we doing? Well, it all kicks off tomorrow (1st March) when Mrs Chicken will be reading stories at Sainsbury’s in Brentwood. There’ll be two sessions: 11:00 and 13:30.

20140228-194931.jpg
Mr Frog will be more than happy to read stories throughout the day, back at Chicken and Frog.

Creative Writing Club will be with Grandad Chicken this week, because Mrs Chicken has been invited to speak at the Brentwood Writers’ Circle, from 14:30. The topic…children’s books of course!

Next week, Brentwood County High School are taking a selection of the WBD books into school, to ‘sell’ on to the students. For those of you who don’t know, each year a fabulous range of books are published just for World Book Day. School children are given a £1 voucher which they can exchange for one of the books or put towards the cost of another book.

From the 6th to 8th March, we will be holding a 10% sale on all full price books (not the WBD books!). And, very excitingly, David O’Connell will be popping in on the 8th, from 16:00-17:30, for yet another one of our free author events.

Not enough? Ok, well we also have Sara Grant with us on the 19th. Schools are booked in for during the day, but Sara is chilling on the sofa after school!

20140228-200920.jpg
And then…Laura Dockrill will be with us for the day on Wednesday 26th, again for school visits.

20140228-201243.jpg

Ooh, last thing for now. Mrs Chicken has been booked to lead a Creative Writing Workshop for Year 5 and 6 pupils at St Stephen’s School.

Phew, we’re exhausted just thinking about it. Happy, but exhausted.

Watch out there’s a zombie goldfish about…

There I was last Saturday evening, minding my own business, when suddenly Frankie appeared on the loving room floor,

20140209-101152.jpg
For those of you who don’t know, Frankie is a zombie goldfish with terrifying powers. His creator, Mo O’Hara, just so happened to visit us yesterday afternoon, so I decided to take Frankie with me to try to get some answers about his bizarre zombifying eyes,

20140209-101428.jpg
As you can see, Frankie is a law unto himself and sadly, Mo struggled to keep him under control! Don’t worry, no child was zombified at Chicken and Frog. (At least, we hope not).

20140209-101606.jpg
Mo’s visit was magical, as she read from her brilliant book ‘My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish’, before encouraging the children to come up with their own unusual pets. Pets including Super Penguin and Tracey Beaker Cat – both with the ability to fly at a moment’s notice.

20140209-102024.jpg

20140209-102113.jpg

20140209-102205.jpg
If you missed out yesterday, you did miss a treat, but we do have signed copies of Mo’s books in store.

p.s. Don’t look into the eyes!

Trouble with Badgers

A strange title for a blog I’ll grant you, but then you don’t like badgers like I know badgers. And I didn’t know badgers well until Monday, when John Dougherty came for a visit.

Now John has written many hilarious books, but his latest ‘Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face and the Badness of Badgers’, has opened my eyes to what naughty creatures they are,

20140124-212724.jpg
So, after quite a horrendous encounter with the M4, John came bouncing through the door, guitar in hand and went straight into his first hour with a very excited group of children from a local primary school. He sang, he jumped around, he enthused about books and generally inspired everyone in the room (adults included). All of this, fuelled with little more than a cup of tea and boundless enthusiasm. Here are some pics of John in action,

20140124-213443.jpg
John’s song about underpants proved very popular…I can’t imagine why!

20140124-213604.jpg
The lucky children got to hear the man himself reading from Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face, as well as getting their books signed. There’s nothing better than a personalised, signed book,

20140124-213744.jpg
After a spot of lunch, John did it all again with another class of children, before collapsing on the sofa for a while to meet passing book lovers.

By the end of the day we had run out of John’s books, but never fear, we have now re-stocked. If you can get to an event with John (or want him to visit your school), I can’t recommend him highly enough. We had a fab day and can’t wait to read the next instalment of Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face.

p.s. We are happy to provide discounted books for author visits either at the shop (for booked in groups) or in schools.

February Half Term

I know we’ve only just got over the New Year festivities, but before you know it it will be February half term and you’ll be wondering what to do with your lovely children.

Well, we have planned some super sessions to keep them out of mischief, as well as our usual Rhythm and Rhyme (Wednesday 10:00-10:30) and stories whenever you feel in the mood! All of the details can be found on our calendar page, but here are some pictorial clues to get you excited:

Thorndon Rocks!

The end of the Christmas holidays is in sight (boo) and after approximately two weeks of asking, I finally got around to taking Max on the Gruffalo hunt at Thorndon Country Park. In my defence, the weather has been rather blustery and I refuse to spend time in a wood when a gale is blowing.

If you haven’t visited Thorndon, you should! The Visitor’s Centre offers a good selection of drinks and munchies, plus a very friendly team of staff on hand. Thorndon itself is absolutely beautiful; you could spend hours wandering around the woodland. There’s picnic areas, clearly marked out trails and a little playground too.

However, the biggest draw for us is the Gruffalo hunt. So off we went a-hunting. Upon arrival at the Visitor’s Centre, we popped in for a map (just 50p) and were soon on our way,

20140105-185509.jpg

Our first find was a little red squirrel hiding up a tree,

20140105-185713.jpg
I promise you, he is up there – it was a bit dark and I have a terrible camera.

With a bit of help from a lovely family who could clearly sense that I get lost just looking from left to right, we soon found the Mouse. He’s so cute,

20140105-185947.jpg
We trudged on. Max lost, then recovered his left wellie boot, fell over and muddied his gloves and finally happened upon the Fox. He’s a sneaky one, hiding in his den,

20140105-190330.jpg
My heart was warmed as we approached the footbridge, and heard a daddy re telling the story of the Billy Goats Gruff to his little boy. The rest of the trail brings you to the Owl, the Snake, the Gruffalo’s child and the Gruffalo himself,

To finish off our jaunt, we had a cheeky little snack in the cafe, bought an Owl and toddled off home,

20140105-191308.jpg
All in all, a brilliant morning out, for just £3.70 (not including the Owl). If you decide to visit, do remember that the car park costs £2.20.

A Grand Day Out

Yesterday I had a day off, out and about with my lovely daughters. We spent the whole day in our fair capital city; we walked a lot, ate a lot and took a lot of photographs too. I wanted to share some of the book-related pictures that I snapped with my phone. Apologies now for the quality (or lack of it) of said pics.

Before we had arrived in Covent Garden, I spotted these rather lovely posters at the station:

A beautiful Alice-inspired safety poster.

There's a series of these glorious Penguin poster ads.

The kids groaned, as I got all excited about anything to do with books, but I don’t care. At least I didn’t drag them around countless bookshops…yes, I know we own one, but it’s a harmless addiction. On saying that however, I did take a few snaps in Harrods, possibly near the children’s books and toys sections, but I can’t remember for certain…

Paddington is coming back in a big way this year.

Moving on. Liberty has this hanging down from a beam (I’m guessing donated by the wonderfully talented team from Matilda),

I couldn’t resist drooling slightly over the case of vintage books displayed at Liberty. Thankfully for my bank balance, there were no copies of Alice,

we wandered down to Carnaby Street. I relived my youth slightly, before the girls made most of the sales in David and Goliath, where I found this brilliant t-shirt:

IMG-20140102-00075See, the influence of literature is everywhere! I also saw these random items:

Mmm, Paperchase.

That’s not everything, however, I shall stop my ramblings for now and leave you in peace.

p.s. Remember, I have asked you to send in a postcard with your favourite book (given or received) over the festivities.

The Hive

Hello all, I hope that you have had a jolly time with family and friends over the past few days. Mr Frog, myself and our clan certainly made the most of our days off, mainly with eating a disproportionate amount of food to stomach capacity and watching Dr Who.

However, our over indulgence is not the focus of this blog. No, instead, I have a piece of information to share and a request. A question first I think. Did you give or receive any books over the festive season? If you did, what were your favourites and why? Answers on a postcard please! Seriously, we would love it if you did respond in the old fashioned way because we’d like to create a cool window display of your postcards.

20131228-162148.jpg
Our address: Chicken and Frog Bookshop, 7 Security House, Ongar Road, Brentwood CM159 AT.

And now for the info. After a year, we have finally signed up to The Hive. What’s that? Well, basically, it’s a way of purchasing books, DVDs, CDs, gifts etc. online, whilst supporting your local bookshop at the same time. You can either pick up your order from us or choose to have it posted it out to you. We get a little commission on every sale and you get to buy your goods from a company that pays their taxes…controversial! Obviously we’re better off if you buy directly from us, but The Hive is certainly another string to our bow. You can reach our link via our website, on the Store page.

That’s it for now. Watch this space for news of our writing competition winners, as well as up and coming author events for 2014.

Update time

Hello lovely readers. I have various pieces of news that I want to share with you. The first is that we now have a loyalty card at Chicken and Frog. For every £10 you spend, you receive a stamp. 5 stamps equals a 20% discount on books.

loyalty cardThere’s a bit of healthy competition going on between myself and Mr Frog, as we have a chicken stamp and a frog stamp…team Chicken will prevail!

In the New Year, on Monday 20th January in fact, we will be visited by author, John Dougherty. John will be spending the day with pre-booked schools, but has kindly agreed to hang out on the sofa for a while after school too. I’ll remind you closer to the time…

We have been very busy over the past few weeks, securing a whole host of exciting author events for 2014. Expect to meet Mo O’Hara, Laura Dockrill, Sara Grant…we also have an event booked for the Spring, mixing science, gardening and books! Not to mention our huge plans for Fairtrade Fortnight, an expansion of our tuition centre (in terms of classes, not actual space).

Last thing. Our website has changed slightly. Our What’s On page gives details of our regular activities, the Calendar gives you a quick overview of the week (and you can skip forward far into the future too) and the Events page is a short and sweet preview of up and coming author events. All of our events can also be found on our Facebook page.

p.s. If you are a teacher who is interested in bringing a class to meet Laura Dockrill and/or Sara Grant, please contact us. Sara will be with us on 19th March and Laura will  be with us on 26th March. Both authors’ books are suitable for ages 7+, with Sara writing for teens as well as younger readers. There will be a morning and afternoon session available. The visit is free of charge, although we do ask you to pre-order books (at a 10% school discount).
