#IBW2014

‘What does that mean?’ I hear you ask, in a slightly perplexed voice. Well, IBW is short for Independent Booksellers’ Week and 2014, well, that’s pretty self explanatory really.

For us, it’s a chance to show off about being an indie. So far this week we have been visited by two lovely authors. The first was Julie Earle on Saturday afternoon. Julie’s book, The Magical Gate, inspired our creative writing club to create magical works of their own.

And on Monday the gloriously talented Eva Katzler joined us for the whole day. Eva met with over 80 school children from local schools, sharing Florentine and Pig,

as well as inspiring the children to create pirate bunting to take back to school.

What a fabulous time we’ve had so far. Don’t forget that this Saturday we have Yasmeen Ismail with us from 11:00-12:00, Maisy Mouse wandering around the town, the gorgeous Princess Belle in from 15:00-16:00 and (yes, I know, and) Creative Writing Club from 16:00-17:30.

Boffin Brainchild: The Verdict

20140614-162020-58820049.jpg
Last week we started our monthly book club with a bang. Well, with a robot actually. At the end of the session I asked for reviews of Boffin Brainchild, so here they are:

‘I thought the book was quite slow in the first chapter, but then on each new chapter it just got more and more interesting. I really liked the ending because it was really happy how it ended. Also it left you in a bit of a position of you have got to keep on reading it.’ (Maya, aged 10)

‘I couldn’t stop reading this book. Some of it was a bit sad but I still think it’s good. It was very exciting. I really liked the ending. My favourite character is Tom.’ (Ellie, aged 9)

‘So far I am enjoying Boffin Brainchild. It is a fun, hilarious book about a robot by the name of Boffin who decides to run away with Tom. So far this has been a great read and I can not wait to read on!’ (Alex, aged 10)

‘So far I have enjoyed the book. The occasional chats make you think harder about the story line and details of the book. From first glance the book didn’t look exciting but when I started reading, it began to get more intriguing.’ (Robert, aged 10)

All in all, Jill Jennings’ book got a thumbs up! So, if you haven’t read it yet, pick up a copy soon.

What a week!

Some weeks at Chicken and Frog tick along at a steady pace, whilst others are a little bit crazy. The week that has just ended was the latter. I’m not complaining, crazy suits us well, but it means that I haven’t had a chance until now to fill you in on what’s been going on.

So, on Monday we went back to work after the May half term. The shop had been open, however we went away for the whole week, leaving Grandad and Grandma Chicken in charge of the coop. (Huge thanks to them both for being wonderfully wonderful). It was fab, although a bit daunting as we haven’t left the shop before. It was in very good hands though and we enjoyed a bit of time away from reality. As you may expect, Monday was rather busy catching up with orders and the like.

On Wednesday, the superb author Dan Freedman came to Brentwood to visit Hogarth Primary School. Before the visit, Dan was interviewed by Michelle Ward at Phoenix FM. There are two points to note here. Firstly, if you’ve never listened to Michelle’s show, you should. She’s hilarious and a really great interviewer. Secondly, if you’re struggling to find the right book for a reluctant reader, who happens to love football, look no further. Dan’s books are perfect,

Dan had the children at Hogarth mesmerised. You can’t beat the experience of meeting an author and finding out first hand what it’s like to go through the process of writing. If you ever get the chance to meet an author, snap it up, it’s inspiring. Here’s Dan in action at Hogarth,

The rest of the week was relatively normal (for us) and then Saturday rocked up, with it’s rain and sun and book club and another author and, and, and…

Yep, one author a week isn’t always enough for us. We’re greedy. Happily, Chitra Soundar agreed to pop in on Saturday afternoon to hang out with our Creative Writing Club and she was amazing. Not only did Chitra share one of her beautiful books with us,

20140608-215900-79140609.jpg
And not only did she tell us a Vietnamese folk tale, Chitra also guided the children through an organic writing process, in which each of them produced an illustrated story to be proud of,

Done? Nope. We also ran our monthly book club for the first time. Boffin Brainchild was very well received I’m pleased to say. Next month’s book (Saturday 5th July) will be Anthony Horowitz’s The Falcon’s Malteser,

Last thing! We hosted a birthday party this morning, which involved the soundtrack of Frozen pretty much on repeat for the duration. Mr Frog coped very well with the glitter and the girls were an absolute delight. At one point it was like sing-a-long-a-Frozen. Very cute indeed. If you pop in tomorrow, there may be glitter…

Celebrate our independents*

*Yes, ‘Independents’ not ‘Independence’ (although you can celebrate that too). On the 4th July it’s American Independence Day, but it’s also Independents Day for all of those fabulous indie businesses out there. We are very fortunate in Brentwood, because the High Street is so much more than faceless chains. Chains have their place, of course they do, but indie businesses, often owned by local families, are the driving force behind the heart of a town.

i-heart-indie-shops-logo

On the weekend closest to Independence Day, local retails celebrate what’s so great about being an indie. We are fortunate in Brentwood, as we are supported by a little pot of funding from the Renaissance Group,

renwho really value what we do. So, we have been busy putting a bid together to make Saturday 5th July truly awesome, not just for us, but for the community. We already have the wonderful author/illustrator Yasmeen Ismail visiting us in the morning. Authors and illustrators are incredibly supportive of indie bookshops which is great, because it means that you get to meet some very talented people.

What else? Well, we have put our funding to good use. Maisy Mouse will be with us throughout the day, as well as visiting the library and many other independent shops along the Ongar Road, Crown Street and the High Road. She will be giving out balloons, as well as posing for pictures. And…we will have a beautiful Disney Princess with us in the afternoon. She will be posing for photographs and handing out little treats too.

Watch this space for full details of the day. And, most importantly, celebrate with us!

Phonics Fun!

There’s always something in the news about phonics – should we test, should we teach… Everyone is entitled to their opinion and the fact is that children learn in a variety of ways. However, it also true that our schools follow phonics programmes, whether you’re a fan or not.
making words1
To that end, Natasha will be running a phonics programme during the summer holidays. Each 30 minute session will include games and interactive activities, to teach your child the tricks of phonics. The sessions are suitable for children starting school in September, or those who have gaps in their phonic knowledge.

When? EVERY TUESDAY & THURSDAY DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS!! (From Tuesday 29th July), 15:00-15:30.
The cost is just £7 per session and we encourage parents to join in. Pre-booking is absolutely essential, as we want to keep groups small. You don’t need to attend all of the sessions, but if you book and pay in advance for 4 or more, there will be a discounted cost.
4-7 sessions = £6 per session
8-10 sessions = £5 per session

Book, book, book club

So, we’ve been having a bit of a think and we’ve come up with a plan. A plan that we think will add some excitement to the reading experiences of children in and around Brentwood. I say ‘we’, it was actually Mr Frog’s idea, but as he says, he’s the ‘ideas man’ and then I put the details together…we are a great team.

Book Club

From the 7th June, we will be running a monthly book club for children aged 8+. The club will take place on the first Saturday of each month, 15:15-16:00*. For the cost of just £7, I (Mrs Chicken) will lead a discussion and activity based upon a given book. The cost will include a copy of the month’s book to take home and love! We will ask you to book your place in advance, so that we order in enough copies of the books. Each month the children will receive a new book, which they are invited to read in their own time, and then bring with them in the following meeting. (Gosh, I’ve said ‘book’ a lot – sorry).

On the 5th June meeting, we will give out the book and read the beginning together, before having a good old discussion about it, followed by a book-based activity. The children will be given a choice of titles to vote on for the following month’s book.

*For the sharp-witted amongst you, you will notice that this means our younger Creative Writing Club will be affected. So, as of the 7th June, we will be merging the Creative Writing Clubs into one session every week. To clarify, Creative Writing Club will run from 16:00-17:30 every week for all ages, with a monthly Book Club preceding it. If your child wishes to attend both clubs, there will be a discounted fee of £10, because we’re nice like that!

Just in case I haven’t said it enough, book, book, book…

Thanks So Much!

What a crazily busy, gloriously wonderful day we’ve had today! A few months back I tweeted (rather shamelessly) Laura Dockrill to ask her if she would like to drop by for a visit, if ever she was in the neighbourhood. And she said…yes! If you don’t ask, you don’t get. The beauty of asking over a Twitter is the semi-anonymity of it all. You don’t need to do the waffly stuff, you just say what you need to say and hide behind the sofa until a response twitters your way.

Anyway, back to Laura. She said ‘Yes’ which was very exciting. So me and Mr Frog got to work, booking in children to meet Laura. Here comes the crazy – we arranged for 75 children to swing by. Not all from the same school, that would be uber crazy.

The day was awesome! Laura spent an hour with each group, talking about life experiences, sharing stories and generally inspiring everyone in the room. If you don’t know about melting Maltesers gently under your bum, you haven’t lived!

And if you haven’t had the chance yet, pick yourself a copy of Darcy Burdock or Hi So Much. (We have signed copies in-store). Darcy is up for the Waterstones book if the year. It deserves to win, so we count ourselves very lucky to have persuaded Laura to visit us.

Here’s some great pics from the day,

A magical experience

As a small, independent bookshop, we count ourselves lucky. Why? Because, firstly, we’re turning a profit (phew), secondly, our customers are awesome and thirdly, we have managed to tempt a huge array of authors and illustrators into Chicken and Frog.

The latest author to agree to spend time with us was Sara Grant. Sara spent the whole day with us yesterday and she certainly worked hard! Within ten minutes of walking through the door, a class of 30 pupils from Hogarth Primary arrived. It was a planned visit, so didn’t come as a surprise, although the timing did!

20140320-213523.jpg
Sara spent an hour with the class, talking about life as an author and in particular, her series of Magic Trix books. In the playground this morning Mr Frog had several mums telling him how much their children enjoyed their visit with Sara.

20140320-213908.jpg
After a spot of lunch, which was wonderfully interrupted by a lovely family whose mum chose to treat her daughters to some books, following a visit to the dentist. What a fantastic reward for going to the dentist!

In the afternoon, the Carnegie reading group from Becket Keys came in to spend time with Sara. Mrs Chicken is fortunate enough to facilitate the reading group at Becket Keys (she is a bird of varied talents).

20140320-214541.jpg
Sara shared so much about her fascinating life as a writer and was truly inspirational, as she guided the group through the process of beginning to form a story.

As if she hadn’t done enough, Sara then met more children after school and even played Zombie Dice with Mr Frog.

Here are a few more pics from the day. My favourite is the photographer being photographed…
