Hello, sorry it’s been a while.

The summer’s nearly gone and I’ve been rather lazy about blogging. I do apologise, but it’s been pretty busy here and the time has just whizzed by.

We have been running a summer school for a Larchwood Primary School, which has kept us out of mischief every morning. It’s been great fun, teaching literacy and numeracy to a very keen group of fantastic children. I hope that they have had as much fun as we have! They have made us very proud.

What else? Well, we’ve been preparing for the Autumn term, as we already have events booked in with Jim Smith, Ian Whybrow, Abie Longstaff, A.F.Harrold and Nicholas Allan…phew, I’m exhausted just typing about it! We are so lucky to be supported by superb authors and so many keen schools and readers.

In very local news, I have become the ‘cluster leader’ for Ongar Road businesses. ‘The what?’ Well, in essence, what it means is that I am responsible for building up a sense of community amongst our fellow Ongar Road neighbours. Our main aim is to up footfall, through new initiatives and a renewed drive. I am increasingly confident that the group will be a positive force for all. If you are involved in a business on the Ongar Road and would like to find out more, please contact me at Chicken and Frog.

So, that’s what we’ve been up to really. Our tuition program kicks back to life from Monday 8th September, although the Friday 11+ class is recommencing on the 5th. There are very few spaces now available for tuition, so if you are looking for English, maths or 11+ tuition, do get in contact.

Here’s to the last few days of freedom, before school goes back!

Happy, happy birthday!

It’s my birthday today. Why thank-you, yes it’s been lovely. I just wanted to quickly share a couple of the gorgeous presents I got today. Not to show off, well, yes to show off, but not about me. However, my incredibe friend Claire deserves a hearty mention. She’s a talented lady and if you haven’t seen her handy work before, where have you been?

Claire is the owner of Beautiful Things and she is, quite simply, fabulous. The dresses below have been hand-made by Claire and both fit perfectly, even though both were sneaky surprises, so were made on measurements without fittings.

Before I scurry away for my dinner and possibly a cheeky glass of wine, I’d like to thank Claire for being a great friend and super seamstress and Mr Frog for being amazing enough to commission Claire to make my Alice dress and matching bag.

The froggy dress will be modelled by my good self tomorrow and I expect that the Alice dress may well feature when we’re back at King George’s Playing Fields on the 8th.

So yummy – meringue carrots, mini scones, chocolate cups…

I’m a very lucky girl. Why? Well, loads of reasons really, but my particular focus this week is that me and him have been married for 18 years and to celebrate, Mr Frog took me to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the Sanderson Hotel on Monday.

The secret to our relationship? Love, trust, honesty and… quite a lot of cake. Here are some delicious pictures of our lovely treat:

Linda was fantastic! Not only us she passionate about books, she’s also dedicated to making sure that the children she meets enjoy the experience. Linda bought with a whole host of fabulous activities, including carnivorous plants to look at under a microscope, biscuits to ice and decorate with jelly frogs and chocolate logs, as well as colouring sheets and if course, her lovely book.

Here are some pics of the day,

Goodbye #IBW2014

The past week has been absolutely crazy! We’ve had so much going on to celebrate Independent Book Week (IBW), culminating in Brentwood’s marking of Independents Day on Saturday.

Here’s a round up in pictures, of all that we have achieved. Before the pics though, a few thank-yous are in order: Julie Earle, Eva Katzler and Yasmeen Ismail – the fab authors who spent some time with us. Pupils from Brentwood Prep, St Helen’s and Hogarth – you were a delight on Monday. The long suffering Mr Frog aka Maisy Mouse! The Renaissance Group for supporting our indies in Brentwood. Siobhan – a lovely uni student who’s helping us out at weekends and last, but by no means least, my brilliant parents for ferrying authors and shop sitting! Not to mention our customers, new and old, as well as other indies (including Mi Neni, The Brentwood Kitchen, Caffe Essex, BMCycles, French Quarter, The Hair Company, Petit Cherub, Brentwood Library, Piccola, Magical Mirror Princesses, Balloon Boutique…) who work so hard to make Brentwood a great place to live.

That was a long list. Sorry if I missed you off…it’s still early!

#IBW2014

‘What does that mean?’ I hear you ask, in a slightly perplexed voice. Well, IBW is short for Independent Booksellers’ Week and 2014, well, that’s pretty self explanatory really.

20140701-185333-68013014.jpg

For us, it’s a chance to show off about being an indie. So far this week we have been visited by two lovely authors. The first was Julie Earle on Saturday afternoon. Julie’s book, The Magical Gate, inspired our creative writing club to create magical works of their own.

20140701-185938-68378169.jpg

20140701-185938-68378895.jpg
And on Monday the gloriously talented Eva Katzler joined us for the whole day. Eva met with over 80 school children from local schools, sharing Florentine and Pig,

20140701-190114-68474778.jpg
as well as inspiring the children to create pirate bunting to take back to school.

What a fabulous time we’ve had so far. Don’t forget that this Saturday we have Yasmeen Ismail with us from 11:00-12:00, Maisy Mouse wandering around the town, the gorgeous Princess Belle in from 15:00-16:00 and (yes, I know, and) Creative Writing Club from 16:00-17:30.

Boffin Brainchild: The Verdict

20140614-162020-58820049.jpg
Last week we started our monthly book club with a bang. Well, with a robot actually. At the end of the session I asked for reviews of Boffin Brainchild, so here they are:

‘I thought the book was quite slow in the first chapter, but then on each new chapter it just got more and more interesting. I really liked the ending because it was really happy how it ended. Also it left you in a bit of a position of you have got to keep on reading it.’ (Maya, aged 10)

‘I couldn’t stop reading this book. Some of it was a bit sad but I still think it’s good. It was very exciting. I really liked the ending. My favourite character is Tom.’ (Ellie, aged 9)

‘So far I am enjoying Boffin Brainchild. It is a fun, hilarious book about a robot by the name of Boffin who decides to run away with Tom. So far this has been a great read and I can not wait to read on!’ (Alex, aged 10)

‘So far I have enjoyed the book. The occasional chats make you think harder about the story line and details of the book. From first glance the book didn’t look exciting but when I started reading, it began to get more intriguing.’ (Robert, aged 10)

All in all, Jill Jennings’ book got a thumbs up! So, if you haven’t read it yet, pick up a copy soon.

What a week!

Some weeks at Chicken and Frog tick along at a steady pace, whilst others are a little bit crazy. The week that has just ended was the latter. I’m not complaining, crazy suits us well, but it means that I haven’t had a chance until now to fill you in on what’s been going on.

So, on Monday we went back to work after the May half term. The shop had been open, however we went away for the whole week, leaving Grandad and Grandma Chicken in charge of the coop. (Huge thanks to them both for being wonderfully wonderful). It was fab, although a bit daunting as we haven’t left the shop before. It was in very good hands though and we enjoyed a bit of time away from reality. As you may expect, Monday was rather busy catching up with orders and the like.

On Wednesday, the superb author Dan Freedman came to Brentwood to visit Hogarth Primary School. Before the visit, Dan was interviewed by Michelle Ward at Phoenix FM. There are two points to note here. Firstly, if you’ve never listened to Michelle’s show, you should. She’s hilarious and a really great interviewer. Secondly, if you’re struggling to find the right book for a reluctant reader, who happens to love football, look no further. Dan’s books are perfect,

Dan had the children at Hogarth mesmerised. You can’t beat the experience of meeting an author and finding out first hand what it’s like to go through the process of writing. If you ever get the chance to meet an author, snap it up, it’s inspiring. Here’s Dan in action at Hogarth,

The rest of the week was relatively normal (for us) and then Saturday rocked up, with it’s rain and sun and book club and another author and, and, and…

Yep, one author a week isn’t always enough for us. We’re greedy. Happily, Chitra Soundar agreed to pop in on Saturday afternoon to hang out with our Creative Writing Club and she was amazing. Not only did Chitra share one of her beautiful books with us,

20140608-215900-79140609.jpg
And not only did she tell us a Vietnamese folk tale, Chitra also guided the children through an organic writing process, in which each of them produced an illustrated story to be proud of,

Done? Nope. We also ran our monthly book club for the first time. Boffin Brainchild was very well received I’m pleased to say. Next month’s book (Saturday 5th July) will be Anthony Horowitz’s The Falcon’s Malteser,

Last thing! We hosted a birthday party this morning, which involved the soundtrack of Frozen pretty much on repeat for the duration. Mr Frog coped very well with the glitter and the girls were an absolute delight. At one point it was like sing-a-long-a-Frozen. Very cute indeed. If you pop in tomorrow, there may be glitter…
